As usual, time is continuing to fly by and as time soars right by us so can the news! May has come and gone in the blink of an eye and has given us great updates in International Regulations and 3D printing news. Here is a quick recap of what you missed in the Medical Device Industry in the busy month of May.

New EU Rules on Medical Devices to Enhance Patient Safety and Modernize Public Health

The European Commission welcomed the adoption of its proposal for two Regulations on medical devices to ensure better protection of public health and patient safety. The new regulations will ensure that all medical devices are safe and perform well. The new rules will improve market surveillance and traceability and will also make sure that all medical devices are designed to reflect the latest science and technology. The expected improvements of these new regulations include improving the quality, safety, and reliability of medical devices, strengthen transparency of information for consumers, enhance vigilance and market surveillance.

3D Printing in The Next 5 Years

In the past five years, 3D printing has made great leaps and bounds in the Healthcare Industry and is expected to continue to do so. Some of the top trends in 3D printing in the past five years include the increase in education and purchasing of 3D printing technologies, more defined FDA guidance, and growing partnerships between companies. Expected trends for 3D printing in the next five years include more user-friendly 3D printing products, more clarifying guidelines on 3D printed medical devices from the FDA, and encouragement of entrepreneurial pursuits in 3D printing research and development by industrial giants.

Innovative Engineering Course Challenges Students to Design Medical Devices

A new course at the University of Texas at El Paso is expanding the concept of challenging engineering students to find solutions to real-life problems by allowing senior mechanical engineering students to apply what they have learned to real world challenges in the Medical Industry. The goal of the Orthopedic Medical Device course is to provide students with hands-on experiences and prepare them to be productive in the workplace immediately. Along with understanding medical device design and complying with the FDA, students are given the opportunity to build their devices using traditional and advanced manufacturing methods.

Shaping Lives – The Impact of 3D Printing Within the Healthcare Industry

In the medical field, 3D printing enables doctors to work faster, shorten procedure time and improve operation results. There have been many cases where patient diagnosis and treatment have been improved by 3D printing. There has been a significant growth in the use of additive manufacturing during surgical planning and is becoming a crucial part of the process. One of the benefits of 3D printing is that it is not restricted to the operating table; in fact, numerous medical establishments are using 3D models to train the next generation of doctors and surgeons on how to cope if things were to go wrong. Overall, 3D printing is innovating ways to improve the Healthcare Industry.
