Kapstone Medical, LLC was founded by John Kapitan in 2007. Kapstone is a Charlotte, NC based company that is focused on product realization for the medical device market.

Kapstone’s main office is located in historic downtown Waxhaw, NC

Our Founder

John Kapitan has 15 years of experience in medical device development. Prior to founding Kapstone, John was the Vice President of Product Development and the Vice President of Regulatory Affairs and Quality for Altiva Corporation, a development stage spinal implant company that was sold to Exactech, Inc. in 2008. John’s experience also includes AcroMed Corporation, DePuy AcroMed, and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. John has designed and managed development for many commercialized products, is an inventor on over a dozen patents and patents pending, and has written several industry articles.

Our Team

John Souza: Project Engineer

John earned his Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where he focused his research on spinal arthroplasty and fusion. His Master’s thesis studied the effects of lateral misplacement of the Synthes ProDisc-C Disc Replacement System. Upon completion of his studies, John became the Director of Research with an accomplished Neurosurgeon in Raleigh, NC on cervical fusion research. He is particularly interested in leveraging clinical research to develop data-driven spinal devices. Prior to John’s career as an engineer, he worked as an EMT/Paramedic for 18 years.

Stuart Lindquist: Project Engineer

Stuart is a Project Engineer with 15+ years of experience as a Project Engineer, 10 of which were spent in the orthopaedics industry. After earning his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh, Stuart launched his career as a Project Engineer in the Steel and Plastics Industries. His desire to apply his skills in the Medical field led him to return to school for a Masters degree in Biomedical Engineering. From here, he became a Development Engineer and Project Leader, focused on the development and commercialization of orthopaedic implants and instruments. His passion for developing cutting edge medical devices and working directly with surgeons led him to a career with Kapstone Medical.

Ottie Pendleton: Project Engineer

Ottie is a product development specialist with 10+ years of Medical Device experience in new product engineering and product management. He started his career in orthopaedics as a field representative, where he provided technical support for more than 2,000 total joint procedures. Ottie then went on to serve as a Project Leader where he led the design, development, and launch of two major product knee reconstructive programs. Most recently, Ottie has worked in medical device design consulting, focusing on helping surgeon inventors and orthopaedic implant companies to develop and commercialize innovative medical devices. He is an inventor on several issued patents and patent applications related to the orthopaedic field. He earned his Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering from the Cornell University and his MBA from Georgia State University. Ottie is based in Kapstone’s Atlanta office.

Ryan Lewis: Industrial Designer

Ryan’s Industrial Design and Human Factors experience is evidenced by his contributions to projects ranging from an endoscopic sinus dilator to a liver tumor ablation device. He has consulted for companies such as Ethicon Endo-Surgery and Becton Dickinson and recently earned his Master of Design degree from the University of Cincinnati. As part of his studies at UC he explored the front end phase of medical device development, as well as the application of human factors and usability to medical devices. His objective is to make devices intuitively usable and to engage clients and users by presenting complex information in a clear and robust manner.

Mike Burgan:  General Manager, Manifest Medical Technologies, LLC 

Mike joined the Kapstone Team to lead the expansion of rapid prototyping and evaluation.  Mike brings with him over 20 years of manufacturing and prototyping, as well as, business development and operations management.  He split 23 years between Parker Hannifin Corp and Precision Castparts Corp in many leadership roles including numerous operations start-ups involving product development, prototyping, and precision machining.  Mike earned his BS in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Akron and an MBA from Arkansas State.

Marc von Amsberg: Project Engineer

Marc has design and management experience in a wide range of fields: medical implants and instruments, CNC machine tools, wire processing equipment, packaging machinery, and armored military vehicles. He graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelors of Science in Engineering Science and Mechanics in 1988.

Bart Salazar: Project Engineer

Bart is a Project Engineer with over 15 years of experience in the fields of orthopedics (sports medicine, small joints, spine), cardiovascular surgery, and brachytherapy. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Design Technology from the University of Central Florida, and holds several patents as both inventor and co-inventor. Bart has worked extensively with surgeons in developing instrumentation and implantable devices and, has a broad knowledge of pre-clinical in-vivo testing having led several studies that culminated in successful FDA submissions.
